The University Fundamental Library one of the oldest and largest university library in Russia. Established together with the University, the Library has over the years made a major contribution to University research and education activities. It dates back to the time when Empress consort Maria Feodorovna became the High Patron of the Orphanage, so it is basically as old as the University. In 2002 the Fundamental Library was named after Empress consort Maria Feodorovna.
Library printed matter collection numbers over three million copies and is comprised of both this year鈥檚 publications and tens of thousands unique editions with only a few books surviving globally, including a number of notable rare editions. This overwhelming collection was gathered and preserved despite all the troubles of the 20th century.

Currently, a major part of the library collection is represented by electronic editions accessible on publisher and aggregator platforms. These do not only include over two hundred thousand textbooks, millions of academic papers and about a million of dissertations in Russian, but also a few dozen million books and papers in English, Chinese and other languages.

Today, the Fundamental Library incorporates both modern facilities for individual research and consulting with specialists and the library website that hosts a set of services and tools for remote information retrieval and efficient remote library services.
There are also recreation areas, areas for group work, quiet spaces and areas where conversations are allowed.
The Library includes the central facility and ten departmental libraries. Ten departmental University libraries are located in various University buildings and offer educational literature. The libraries operate via an RFID system, using an electronic library card and RFID book tags.

Library website allows users to search within the library e-catalogue, request printed materials, access user account to communicate with library staff and browse information and navigation tools. The Fundamental Library constantly stays in touch with its readers through VK, Facebook and Instagram social networks and advises readers by email or instant messengers.
Library Education Programmes offer classes for all education levels. The library hosts education seminars with the best Russian and global experts in education and academic research.
Library premises have been made accessible for individuals with accessibility challenges. The library offers a braille display computer and Non Visual Desktop Access applications. Electronic collections also include accessible publications.
